Canning Pears & a little about me

Charley and I canned today.

I pealed, cut and chopped the pears. I mixed the light syrup.
I did the jars and lids and I stuffed the pears into the jars.

Charley manned the canner!
Together we did 14 quarts.

Glynis tagged me to tell 10 Random facts about myself.
I don't really have anything interesting to say,  but here goes. . .

1. When I was a baby, there was something wrong with me, they took me to the doctor and he couldn't cure me, so Mom took me down to Grandma's house and they put me through a horse's collar. It cured me!

2. When I was young, I wanted to be an archeologist or a teacher. I ended up working as a secretary before I married and then became a full time homemaker and mother.

3. I don't sew very much now, but I used to sew a lot. I sewed my own wedding gown, Halloween costumes, leisure jackets (remember those?) for Charley when I was dating him, my swim suits, Nehru jackets and bell bottom pants and lots of other things. I am really dating myself here.

4. I love genealogy. We are not descended from royalty, but our ancestors have fought in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil  War, WWI and WWII. Our family members were teachers,  farmers, boatmen, Cherokees, RR workers, carpenters and coal miners. We are  proud to be who we are - which is a little bit of all these people.

5. I love vacationing in West Virginia. My favorite place is Pipestem State Park. We went there on our honeymoon and have visited every year since then.

6. When I was a young, my favorite singers were Herman's Hermits, Three Dog Night, Bread, Chicago and Elvis.

7. I love to cook, but hate to clean up the mess I make.

8. I dislike housework, especially dusting. Please don't wear white gloves when you visit me.

9. I love chocolate! Some of my favorite forms of it are Hershey's kisses, M & Ms and no bake cookies.

10. I am afraid to fly in an airplane, but would love to ride in a helicopter.

Now you know a little bit more about this country girl.

I am not tagging 5 other people like I am supposed to do, but if you want to tell us just 1 thing about you in your comment, we would love to learn a little about you.

  1. Thanks for sharing about yourself Janet! You did a good job on those pears. I sometimes make pear sauce(just like apple sauce) and this summer made pear butter!

  2. You are a very interesting person. I have known you most of my life, but I did not know some of these things about you. I used to think that I would like to parachute out of an airplane when I was younger, but I would never do it now. Just too chicken I guess.

  3. Nice to meet you Janet. :) Seems everyone is doing pears these days; make some preserves for me please.
Things about me? 1)I believe in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 2)I'm a very shy person.

  5. Janet -- I am facinated by your history. You certainly have a wonderful family life. Your sewing skils remind me of my mother's -- of which I didn't inherit creative skills in. and housework, my mother and her German family would put most home makers to shame but I like you don't like to clean up messes in the kitchen or dust. Could be because I was expected to help with the spit and shine household since I was four. that is all -- fun read. -- barbara

  7. Hi Janet! I just loved your post today, the canned pears look wonderful. My neighbor gave me a bag of asian pears from his tree a few weeks ago. It took them along time to soften up but once they did they tasted like heaven. We were all eating two or three a day! We were down right greedy. :)

Lets see one fact about myself...1. When I was a little girl, six years old I entertained and sang with a band one summer, in the lounge of the Pacific Coast Club in California. It was a beautiful castle like building right on the water, with it's own little private beach, swimming pool, and restaurant. My Dad knew the people who had the band. My Mom made me a little sparkly silver dress and I wore white go go boots. I had three numbers I sang: "What's New Pussy Cat", "These Boots Are Made for Walking" (Are you ready boys...start walking!) And I would dance like Nancy Sinatra). They would then lift me up on the piano and I would dedicate the last song "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" to my Grandpa. Boy did I have fun. It was a good thing I had the chance to do it when I did because the next year I suddenly became very shy. :) Have a lovely evening! Delisa :)

  8. I especially like the horse collar story. That's pure Appalachia! As for genealogy, I always say "how do you know who you are if you don't know where you came from?" I'm descended from an Ichabod, Mingo County Hatfields, Applachian pioneers, moonshiners, and farmers. No royalty here, just hardscrabble mountain folk. Jim

  9. Feel like I know you much better now, and I think we are kindred spirits. I don't like flying, although I have to occasionally when it's too far to drive!

  10. How interesting about the horse collar! I don't like to dust either and I live in the dustiest house I've ever lived in.
Not too much to tell about me.

  11. Enjoyed getting to know you.

Most interesting facts are I moved to the USA from Australia at age 13.

I've been a quadriplegic for over nine years now.

  12. Janet, great canning venture! I'm looking forward to getting back to it myself! Loved the list of things about yourself. Now I feel like I know you a little better. Really interesting! Here are a couple of things about me:
I was born in AL but because my Dad was in the Navy I lived there very little in my growing up years....however, I am VERY old-fashioned in my thinking, anyway. I was raised in the Primitive Baptist faith, and though I am not a P Bapt I love the sweet humility of the members of that church...and I love Sacred Harp singing, which is a 5-note accapella singing that dates back to Shakespeare's time, and has almost died out unless you are in the Appalachian hills or backwoods of Ga or Al. It's a wonderful style of music! Also, I have twice hiked the Grand Canyon, and when very young I imagined for a while living in a lighthouse!
