Mother's Day Memories and Mementos

  Mother's Day Flowers

I enjoyed Sunday surrounded by my three boys and a daughter-in-law. My oldest son works 6 days a week and we don't get to see him as often as I would like. It was a nice get together.

We enjoyed eating dinner with the memories of past mothers in our family surrounding us.

We ate on dishes that had belonged to Charley's mother. This was the china I remember her using when I was dating Charley in the 1970s. She used them often, not just on special occasions. I think that is the way it should be. We don't have the whole set, many had been chipped and broken down through the years. I was lucky and found a group of the exact same dishes at a church yard sale last year. No one else wanted them -- and on the last day I paid half price for the box of assorted pieces to add to ours.

Strawberries were served in a beautiful old bowl of my mother's.

The old tablecloth that covered our table, now crumpled and waiting for the crumbs to be shook out, was given to me by my Aunt Irma. She was my mom's baby sister.

When I was growing up, mothers wore either white or red carnations on Mother's Day. You wore red if your mother was still living and white if she had passed away. Maybe some still do, but I don't see people doing that as much any more. I didn't wear one yesterday,  but it would have been white.

I didn't have my mother yesterday, but the little baby on her lap has many loving memories of her.

Found Treasures in the Garage

Vintage Thingies Thursday

I'm participating in Vintage Thingies Thursday again, hosted by Colorado Lady. Go visit and see others who are posting their vintage thingies.

I was cleaning out the garage and look what I found:

old aprons. . .

more old aprons. . .

more old aprons. . .

and more old aprons.

And I found some vintage table cloths hiding out there, too.

I just love the colors in these three. . .

and the colors in these also. They used to make table cloths so pretty.

And here are three more.

I also found these old post cards from Florida. Most are dated from the 1930s. The colors are so vivid and the texture of the cards are so different than the ones made today. Take a close up look at them and see how pretty they are.

And, last but not least, here I am wearing a hand made dress made in 1963 when West Virginia was celebrating it's Centennial. I just love it! Now if I could just lose about 10 pounds so it would fit me better.

I think I'm going to have to clean out the garage more often. It's hard to tell what else I might find out there.

I didn't find this in the garage, but since Saturday is the 4th of July, I thought I would post this beautiful old picture of the flag that hangs in my bedroom.

God Bless the USA!

Family Reunion

We had our family reunion Saturday! Lots of family, lots of fun, lots of food!

It was at Cedar Lakes. The West Virginia Writer's Conference was also at Cedar Lakes this weekend. I've been busy, that's why it's been so long since I posted. If you want to read about the Writer's Conference go here to my writer's blog.

Our youngest member paid us a visit at the Reunion. I introduce to you Lilyana Grace, my sister's grgrandbaby.

And our oldest family member was my dad. He will be 85 in August.

We also had a visit from the newlyweds! Last year my son Charley proposed to Jennifer at our family reunion. This year they came as man and wife.

Here is Aunt Irma, my mom's sister. She was the 9th and next to last child of my grandma and grandpa McMillion.

The kids had fun blowing bubbles.

We really had a wonderful time this year. And, after it was all over, I came home and washed my tablecloths that I put on all the picnic tables. Here's a few of them hanging out to dry.

more. . .

more. . .

a few more. . .

and, a few more.

This is one reason I collect vintage tablecloths. I use them every year at our family reunion. I love the beautiful colors, pictures and patterns of the old cloths. This was only a few of the ones I took. Every table under the shelter was covered with one.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my family reunion. We'll do it again next year.

Yard Sale Treasures

The yard sale season may be winding down, but not this weekend. There was almost a whole page of yard sale ads in our local newspaper this week.

I love them and my husband and I went to a number of the closer ones.

I got fall flowers and decorations and Halloween stuff (many of the Halloween items were given to me at one yard sale we went to), and I got 4 wooden birdhouse napkin holders for only 25 cents. I made these into Christmas ornaments. I might show you those in another posting.

Below are a few of my favorite finds.

Here is a picture that I just love. It is an old litho titled Cardinal and Wild Cherry. I think it is so pretty.

And I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but I just couldn't resist buying this old quilted pig for $1. Anybody have any ideas?

And I got this goose with 7 outfits. It was still in the UPS packing box, sealed and never opened, where the person had ordered it off of the internet. I paid $3 for her, I just love it. There is a pond close to our house and the geese fly over all the time and walk around in the field in front of our house. Now my goose can sit on the porch and watch the real ones fly over.

Here is a beautiful vintage tablecloth to add to my collection, I never pay more then $1 for my tablecloths. I think this one is especially pretty.

and a wooden tray with a mirror in the bottom with a coke ad painted on it. I know it's not real old, but it caught my husband's eye.

And here is a pretty pink footed dish. I don't know if it's depression glass or not, but I like it.

Anybody else find any goodies at yard sales this weekend?
