Follow up to Hornet's Nest Post

A while back I posted about the hornet's nest in our maple tree.

We were going to take it down after the first couple of frosts and keep it. Well, rain and wind came through one night before we were able to retrieve it from the tree. The wind tore off the bottom of the nest.

We were sad about it because it was such a beautiful nest. There was nothing we could do about it, so my husband took it down from the tree and put it on our burn pile.

On my way to the garden a while ago, I looked and saw the nest. Something caught my eye. The inside of the nest was exposed, so I reached in and pulled it out.

I had never seen the inside of a hornet's nest before, and I bet you haven't either.

It's beautiful..... it's' like a three story structure inside...attached together by a stem in the middle.

Here I took a picture of it on the branch of our apple tree.

Here is a close up of the nest....

Some people may think it's gross, but I find it very interesting. It is amazing to look at. It is so intricate and delicate.

I think we'll keep it. It would be a good show and tell for a child's science class.

Have any of you ever seen the inside of a hornet's nest?

  3. I have never been very close to a hornets nest, I think I would be afraid there could still be a hornet in there.

  4. I don't think so, but I have now. You're like me, little sister....we keep everything. You've given me an idea for a post. Thanks.
