Road Trip on a Cool Day

We went on a road trip Saturday up the Ohio River to Wheeling.

Here are a few sights we saw along the way.....

This was an unexpected pleasure. Marble King at Paden City, WV. I saw the sign and couldn't resist stopping.
It was a nostalgic trip back in time. Anyone remember playing a game of marbles when they were a child? The factory was beside the gift shop. The gift shop was a house with an open sign in the window, filled with lots of marbles and glass items.

MARBLES, MARBLES.....

AND MORE MARBLES!

A Mail Pouch Tobacco Barn in Friendly, WV

This building is the home company in Wheeling, WV

For my previous post on the history of Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns and more pictures go here.

At the end of the road, just what we were looking for.

"COME ON IN AND LOOK AROUND"

"JOIN THE CROWD!"

"HURRY!"

"NOW BE NICE, THERE'S ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE"

"Y'ALL COME BACK NOW, YOU HEAR."

Have you ever been to Cabela's?

  1. My Mother would have been in Heaven in that marble store. She loved those things.
I always get a little nostalgic when I see one of those Mail Pouch barns. There was one on Rt.119, I used to pass by everyday.
I've never been to Cabela's but I would like to, just to snap pictures.

  2. Well, Jan, you did a pretty good job on that post. You should have mentioned that big sis went along for the ride too. And that we had a nice lunch at Bob Evans. And that one of my favorite nephews drove us in his nice new car. Andrew is a great guy and his aunt loves him. I had a great day. Thanks.

  4. Hi Janet,
So glad you dropped by my blog today. I grew up in Spencer, then lived in Va. for 30 years before retiring back to W.VA.
I actually posted that Friendly Mail Pouch Barn back a few months ago.
If you like barns I did a whole post of Quilt Barns from over in Ohio as well.
Was at Cabela's a few weeks ago - that is a beautiful sculpture isn't it!
I saw the sign for the Marble King but we didn't stop. Wish I had now.
Nice to meet you. I enjoyed my visit here.

  5. LOVE the marble shop! Marbles are so hard to find nowadays, and this would be a fun place to pick some up! I want to cast some garden steppingstones and would love to have my grandson embed marbles and shells in them as well as doing his hand and footprints! And I'm so glad you showed more pictures of the Mail Pouch tobacco barns. Love Cabelas too!

  6. Hi Janet,
I haven't been here for a few days. I've been reading what I've missed. Boy, that Mail Pouch Barn pix sure brings back some memories! Do you have any pix of the Burma Shave signs?
    Deb :-)
