Cooking With My Favorite Rolling Pins

A while back I gave you my recipes for blackberry cobblers.

We had a church dinner tonight and I made everyone's favorite dessert. This is the one where when I walk in the door carrying my baking dish, they say "Did you bring it, did you bring it?"

I forgot to take pictures while I was making it, but.....

here it is before putting it in the oven...the dough and berries are floating in a stick of melted butter and a mixture of 2 cups of sugar dissolved in 2 cups of water.

Forty-five minutes later it comes out of the oven looking like this.........

It is so good, the dough melts in your mouth. You need to eat this with a spoon so you don't accidentally leave any of the berry mixture on your plate. It is very juicy, you don't need milk with this cobbler, although a scoop of vanilla ice cream would go nicely with it.

You can get the recipe here on an earlier post of mine. It is the first cobbler recipe on that page.
And, yes, as the comment on that posting stated, I did win a blue ribbon at our County Fair with this cobbler.

Give it a try, you wont be sorry. If you want you can substitute 2 cups of finely chopped apples and a tsp. of cinnamon in place of the berries in this recipe.

You need a rolling pin for this cobbler and below is a picture of my favorite ones.

The one in the middle is one that my mom gave me when I got married 30 years ago. It was hers and she doesn't remember where she got it or who gave it to her. It is very old and you can tell the handles are hand carved. I love it and you couldn't give me a million dollars for it.

The two on the ends are also favorites. My son made them for me. I use the one on the right all the time. He patterned it after the old one in the middle. I told him the other one was too pretty to use. He made it out of a combination of three different woods. I love it! It is so pretty.

Do you have an old favorite cooking utensil that you use?

Let me know if you give the cobbler a try.

  1. Janet,
These look sooooooo good. I'm going to have to try this.

I like to bake, and I always use my great-grandmaws sifter. It aint pretty but it still works just fine, and there's no way I'd ever part with it either.

  2. I've copied this recipe down Janet and can't wait to make it. My sister is coming down from Missouri next week to see me and I'm going to tell her to bring me some of her blackberries out of the freezer. :) I have my great-aunt Maggie's rolling pin - a marble one. It weighs a ton! blessings, marlene

  3. Looks delicious-wish I was coming to church! I have many old utensils I use that were my mothers or my mother-n-laws. One that comes to mind-a strainer that has my husbands bite marks on it from when he was a baby. I used it this morning!

  9. Well, the cobbler is in the oven! I don't know how you got your rolls so pretty and neat. Mine we're falling apart left and right. Regardless, I got them into a "roll form" and it's baking! The liquid still scares me though :)

  10. I bet it turned out great! The liquid soaks right into the dough.
