Writing Wednesday - Dry Holes and Gushers!

Welcome to Writing Wednesday!

First off, a thank you to Carole Anne Carr over at The Adventures of a Children's Author for passing on to me the You are an...Inspiration Award. As most of you know, I don't really go by the rules of awards and such. But I usually mention them when someone is nice enough to give me one.

Now on to my other topic for the day.

Dry holes and gushers!
What do they have to do with writing, you ask?
Everything!

I am going through a gusher period at the moment.
I have all these ideas and stories in my head and they are all gushing forth trying to splash out onto paper (or maybe I should say computer screen).

I am currently working on what I think is a YA (young adult) manuscript. Notice I said I think it is a YA manuscript. I've never written a YA before, so wish me luck. If you notice my little WIP gadget at the top of my page, you will see that the computer is currently sticking it's tongue out at me.

But, I also have two PBs (picture books) I am working on. I had written one of these a few months ago and I have now brought it down from the attic of my mind and started dusting it off. I just finished the other PB and it is very short and sweet. In fact, I'm thinking it could be published as a board book.

I also have a manuscript I am working on that is not a fictional story, but a collection of articles, poems, recipes, crafts and such that I would really like to get some feed back on as to how to put it all together so a publisher might consider it.

I sometimes feel like a juggler . . .

and wish there were more hours in the day.

So, how about you? Are you experiencing a dry well or having a gusher?
It doesn't have to pertain to writing, we can be overwhelmed with garden work, housework, crafting ideas or DIY projects around the house.

Dry wells and gushers can both be very frustrating.

Happy Writing!

  1. Congrats on the gusher : ) I like it when I have a strong urge to write about something-and it just pours onto the paper.

  2. My elderly neighbor used to have a reply when asked how he was doing, "Steady by jerks, like a toad a-walkin'!" I think writers are about that same way.

  3. Hi Janet, I'm so happy for you, it is a wonderful feeling to be in the middle of a gusher! You sound like you have some really creative and interesting projects going on. I am in kind of a rest mode, after a couple of weeks of "gush". Have a lovely evening ahead, good work! Delisa :)

  4. At present I think I'm experiencing a dry well with my quilting; a few years back I had a gusher with my writing and after self-publishing the book I felt satisfied.

  5. Hi Janet - I'm so glad you found me! I followed you back here. :)

I'm not so much in a dry spell as a wishy-washy spell. I write across multiple genres and need at the moment to JUST PICK ONE. LOL I have so many things going on that I can't seem to focus on one long enough to get anything done. I see so many prolific writers out there and wonder how all that juggling goes on. So how do you do it? What is your juggling secret?

  6. Gushers are fun! Enjoy it :)

My computer has gone away to Repair Land so I'm definitely in a dry spell!

  7. Janet--Thanks for following. I'll give you a shout out on my next post.

I love the phrase "gusher." I have submitted a few pieces recently, which is a "gusher" in my experience, but I am trying to keep the flow going...

  8. It sounds like you have some great ideas. I think a book with your articles, craft ideas and recipes would be a wonderful tribute to your Appalachian heritage. Don't forget to include your photos!
    Good luck with your writing,
    Anita
