Weekend Happenings and a Guessing Game

I have been very busy this weekend.
He have visited one of our cemeteries and have two more to go to.
And, it has been soooo hot!
On our deck thermometer, which gets direct sunlight, it was 111 degrees today.

These little baby robins seem to be doing okay, though.
Aren't they cute?

And, I also found a dove's nest in our grapevines. So far two eggs have been deposited in the nest.

There was a rumor Friday that Ripley was on sale, so we checked it out.
Sure enough, they were right. Ripley was on sale!
But, believe it or not, I never bought anything from the Courthouse lawn.
I didn't even buy any of this silvercrest Fenton or salt and pepper shakers!

We did go to a few yard sales, though, and I picked up a few things.
I saw this in the yard of one of my friends.
I would have liked to have brought it home with me, but it wasn't for sale.
Do you know what it is?

Here's another view of it.
I bet some of you know.

Any guesses?
I'll come back tomorrow and tell you what it is.

Here is the answer.
Okay everyone, we had some pretty good guesses.
They said this used to be at our Capitol building a long time ago in Charleston.
That little spot on the back of it used to have a ring attached to it to hitch your horse to.
These were steps used for a lady to step up onto her horse and sit side saddle.

Fuzzy Wuzzy Baby Birds

Newborn baby birds with fuzzy tops. What could be cuter?

Just hatched and being closely watched over by her nearby robin parents.
click on this shot to see a close up of these young cuties!

We have nests filled with babies in our Pine tree, two holly trees, Catawba tree, and apple tree.

 awww!

If you look close, you will see a baby bird's big mouth open for lunch.

I hear the tweeting sounds of babies coming from all of our birdhouses.
I think the older and more rustic the birdhouse is, the more they like it.
Earlier in the spring, I saw two types of birds fussing over ownership of this old house.

Yes, I think we are having an explosion of fuzzy, wuzzy baby birds in our little acre of green.

Do you have an explosion of fuzzy wuzzy baby birds around your house?

Bird Housekeeping 101

I think the birds have been around me too much this spring and I am rubbing off on them.

They are terrible housekeepers!

But, they are also wonderful mothers, and when it gets down to it, that is what counts!

Their houses may be messy, but the mothers are always close by watching over the youngins! The mother of these baby robins flits around in the pine tree nearby whenever anyone gets close to her babies. She doesn't bother you or swoop down on your like some of the other mother birds, but she just makes sure you know she is around!

And as a side note. . . I keep looking where I walk in our yard. My eyes are always on the look out for these little blue people called the Smurfs! With so many little mushrooms popping up, there's sure to be a few of them around. Don't your think? If so, I have my camera ready!

Sons, Garden, Baby Birds

I thought I'd play a little catch up with what's been going on around our house.

Here is a picture of me and my three boys taken on Mother's Day. I think someone should have told Andrew to smile.

Here's me and my hubby working in the garden before the rains came. We finally got the potatoes and tomatoes planted.

And, I've been watching my baby robins grow. I have a robin nest at the back door where the drain comes down and one in a bird feeder at the end of the grape vines. This nest is in my blackberry patch.

Baby Robin Saga

Baby robins thrive outside among the blackberry plants.
They play hide and seek beneath the green vines.

But this baby robin thrived on adventure.
She loved to roam in buildings and hop onto pretty red tillers.

"Who are you? You don't look like my mommy. I'm not going to budge until I see my mommy.
No m'am, I'm going to be like Granny Clampet and I'm not going to budge from this pretty red tiller."

"What? What's this? Where are you taking me? Help! Mommy, where are you?"

If the sweet, stubborn baby robin won't budge, then you do the next best thing. You move the pretty red tiller.

"You're not my mommy. I'm not going to budge until I see my mommy. Mommy, where are you? There's a strange man staring at me."

"Oh, no! They're ganging up on me."

"I've had enough of this. I'm going to go find my mommy."
The sweet, stubborn baby robin hops off into the dark night.
Another adventure awaits her tomorrow.

You can click on the pictures above for a close up of the sweet, stubborn baby robin.

Pictures of the Day!

It's a very nice day today. It's breezy, but it feels great.

Look what I saw when I opened my front door a little bit ago.
Baby birds aren't afraid of anything, I was able to take quite a few pictures of her.
I don't know who's more regal, the baby robin or our statue of Nippy.

Here's another one. Isn't she cute?

I promise, this is the last picture of dachshunds and baby robins.
My white irises bloomed today for the first time. I love these,
I got the start from my mother in law years ago.
I wish I had more of them.

And my peonies are droopy, but they smell so good.

And last, but not least, my snowball bush. I love snowball bushes, I just wish they stayed pretty longer. The flowers disappear too fast. My grandmother had snowball bushes in her yard and every year on her birthday her children and grandchildren came down to her house and had a picnic in her yard. We'd take group pictures in front of her snowball bushes.

Hope you enjoyed seeing a little of my world today.
Now I'm gonna go back outside and see what that baby robin is up to.
