Yard Sale Goodies

I thought I'd show you a few of my yard sale goodies.

I got a set of 4 rose colored placemats and this box of old stained glass ornaments. I thought the ornaments would also look good hanging in a window at Christmas time.

Cookbooks! I love cookbooks. I also found the children's book, Wizard of Oz. I've seen the movie many times, but have never read the book - now I can read the book! That little thing in the upper left hand corner is an old folder that holds sewing needles. I love vintage sewing items.

I had to pick up this glassware, since it was so cheap. Two more sets of salt and pepper shakers to add to my collection, a teeny tiny Coke glass and an old glass syrup server. The syrup container is very heavy and I love the red plastic lid on it. I wish it wasn't warped, but oh well, everything can't be perfect. I've never seen one before with a lid on it like that. Have any of you?

And, I'm not sure what this is supposed to be. My husband gave me a worried look when I picked it up. It is almost 19 inches tall and looks old. I have some old potato mashers, but none this big. I thought it would be good to crush big bags of ice with that you buy at the ice machines. You know how they get hard and stuck together sometimes.  I wonder what Charley thought I was going to use it for?

It is getting to be that time of year.
Have you been go any good yard sales lately?
What is your weakness?
If the price is right, what do you just have to have when you see it at a yard sale?

  1. I went to a few garage sales today and will show soon the goodies I bought.
The city wide ones are also starting and the church ones! It's my favorite time of the year!

  2. I have a small collection of old illustrated novels. Jane Eyre, Rebecca, that sort. So I'll always pick up one of those when I come across them.

I like those salt and pepper shakers. They're fun to change up the look on the kitchen table :)

  3. Janet,
Is the wooden object the center of a butter churn? I love yard sales too!

  4. I checked out your collection of vintage kitchen items. They're all really neat. But I saw no egg beaters -- I have a collection of egg beaters hanging in my kitchen. Some came from relatives, some from flea markets, and some from eBay. They make for good conversation.

  5. Janet, I think it might be called a mangle? It would have been used to stomp, for lack of a better word, the clothes in a washtub. The washtub would have been over a fire and the water, lye soap and clothes brought to a boil. Then this thing would have been used to move the clothes around and kinda stomp them to get the dirt out. That's one suggestion. It could also be a ...can't remember the word...used to strike a froe to split shingles. Whatever it is, it is certainly not a modern-day tool :)

  6. Forgot to say...we went to a yard sale too, got a McCoy planter, a bluebird fingerpuppet, a glass apple jug (like vinegar used to come in, I think?), and a couple other things, all for $1.25. Then we went to the Rockport auction and came home with a truckload, literally. Lots of great finds.

  7. Lil red hen, I didn't have any egg beaters in that post did I. I've got one now, though, it has a red wood handle on it.
Granny Sue, I thought, like me, you were going to slow down. It's hard to do isn't it. I just looked around on the internet, I think it may be called a "stomper." Washing clothes sure was a lot harder in the old days.

You sure did find yourself some treasures there girl!

God bless ya and have a marvelous Mother's Day weekend! :o)

  9. Hubby who was raised on a WV farm said he had some similar to that one and they called it a mallet and used them for pounding wood chisels.
I have no clue but I love all the other stuff. Esp the books. you got some great ones.
    Blessings. B

  12. Janet -- love garage sales. I like two things that you picked up. The first is the Wizard of Oz book and the second is your piece of woodenware. I know this kind of woodenware as a sausage stuffer. It was used with a metal tube-like container. -- barbara
