Has Anybody Seen . . .

a lamp like this?

Isn't it beautiful? I love the way the light sparkles and reflects off the wall. I only have a 40 watt chandelier bulb in it. I got this at an Estate Sale this morning. I didn't even see the add in yesterday's paper, I just happened to glance at our local paper again this morning and saw the ad when Charley got in from work. So we drove to Ripley real quick to take a look. I'm so glad we did.

It is not glass, it is made of plastic. I'm wondering if it was hand made or not. What do you think? Unfortunately, the top 'shade' has a couple of cracks in it, but you can't really tell unless you look at it up close. It looks like to me that it was made of those plastic bowls from maybe the 40s or 50s. The shade looks like a large bowl with a hole cut in the bottom of it. But I don't know what the bottom could have been made from unless maybe a candle holder. I've never seen plastic candle holders before, though. On the bottom of the large bowl it says, A & A Plastic Corp. NY.

Here is a close up of the bottom of it.

And here is a picture of it without the shade.

I looked around on the internet and couldn't find any like it, but I really didn't know how to google it. I didn't know what to call it.

So, help me out if you can, have any of you seen a lamp like this before?

I just love it, cracks and all. I only paid $2 for it and I think it is just lovely when it is turned on.

  4. It is pretty...from a distance it appears to be glass. Is the globe glass? Anyway it is a nice lamp for just $2.00. Like I said you are the lucky one with yard sales and such.

  5. Hi Janet,
I thought it was glass too!
when you go to google..in the search spot type in the name you see on the lamp and that should take you to a list that you can search from there.
Let us know what you find.

  7. Well, so far it doesn't look like anyone has seen one like it before. Shirley - the globe is glass.
Deb - I have tried looking up A & A Plastic Corp and nothing shows up.
Maybe I have a one of a kind. Upon closer inspection of the midsection, it has been put together, but the top piece has like a ridge around it and the bottom piece doesn't, it just comes straight up and meets the other one. So that kinds of knocks out my idea of two identical small bowls being put together.

  8. No I've never seen one of those. It is pretty. Looks like a fancied up hurricane lamp. Maybe someone got artistic and it is one of a kind.

  10. I found this online:
    http://www.manta.com/company/mm5w7mm
I'm not sure it's the same company though. I would guess your lamp was made in the 60's or 70's when the hurricane lamp reproductions were so popular. Being plastic, but with a glass chimney, makes me think it was probably something that could be bought at Woolworth's or a five-and-dime store like that. It is very pretty, and I bet when it's on it really sparkles!

  11. Janet,

The only other one I've ever seen was red. I worked for an auctioneer for years and it came out of an estate sale. Not sure how old it was or when it was made. If you find anything out, please let me know. It's a very interesting and unique piece.

    Enjoy your week.
    Blessings,
    Mary
