Thrift Store - Books, Books, Books

I love books! All kinds of books.

When I went to the Mountain Mission thrift store today while my husband was at the dentist getting work done on his root canal, I found their books on sale for 20 cents. Was I ever happy.

I came out of the store with my arms full of books.

And then on the way home when we stopped at the Sissonville Library to drop of  February copies of Two-Lane Livin', I found four books on their for sale shelf for 25 cents each!

four hardback quilting books, hardback crochet book,
Kovel's Antiques and Collectible 2011 price guide book, etc.

Three Little Golden Books, The Dot, The Family Under the Bridge, The Homecoming,
The Boxcar Children and The Doctor's Daughter

I just couldn't pass these books up at these prices.

Earlier this week I received this box of goodies in the mail.
I had won a giveaway over at

box filled with pretty things!

Have you found any good deals lately?

Thrift Store Bargains

I guess you might say that I have been spoiled by shopping at thrift stores and yard sales.

I'm not embarrassed to wear clothes from thrift stores. In fact, I'm proud that I can get good clothes without paying the high prices in stores. I just bought some sweaters at the thrift store. They are very pretty and like new condition. If I had bought them new at the store, I would hate to think what I would have paid for them. I only paid 25 cents each!

I also bought some more milk glass. The white plates are Pyrex, Anchor Hocking and Corning.
I think the milk glass would be very pretty to display at Christmas. I could put floral displays, candy or fruit in them. I love milk glass! I only paid 25 cents each for these also.

Here is a close up of the large plate. I think the edge is so pretty. It looks like little tulips on the border. These plates could be used to put candy or cookies in at Christmas and given as gifts. The plates could be part of the gift.

Do you do much thrift shopping? Do you save money by buying second hand clothes?
I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of. I know some people who would never buy clothes at yard sales and thrift stores. Why pay $20 or more for a pair of jeans when you can get them for $1 or less. I'm proud that I save money by shopping wisely.

Rainy Day Finds

It's been raining the past couple of days. We weren't supposed to get rain today, they said it would be in the southern coal fields, well they were wrong. It also rained in the Jackson County farmlands.

We were able to go to the roadside sale before it rained. I didn't get much, I'm trying to cut back on my thrift shopping, but I got a few things.

a silver plated butter dish. . .

. . . and a non matching salt and pepper shaker. I thought they were cute, and who knows, I might find a match to them somewhere else. It's happened before.

Another pretty pepper shaker.

I can add these to my collection.

We also went to the Resource Center, or as the locals affectionately call it. . . The Quarter Store.

I got books and magazines! The magazines are only 10 cents each and the books are 25 cents each.

A few for me . . .

A few for my husband. . .

And a few for my wood working son. . .

More for my son. . .

Do you think they will take the hint and make me something? I hope so.

Now, onto another subject.

Help! I got crazy the other day and took on the challenge to write 7 picture books in 7 days. These will hopefully be stories I can go back to later and edit and make into good books.
I've only finished three so far! I'm running out of ideas. Do any of you have a good or unique idea for a child's picture book? I'm open for suggestions.

Addiction to Yard Sales and Thrift Stores

I admit it!
I'm addicted to yard sales and thrift stores.
Maybe it's the thrill of the hunt or the exciting find.
I'm not looking for anything in particular.
I go because you never know what you're going to find and that one item I find may be something I just can't live without......

Like the old motion lamp below I got for $3.
It reminds me of the one we had at home when I was a child.... and that makes it priceless!

Or this really neat bookcase filled with my collection of Little Golden Books I got for $3.
Can you guess what it's made from? (see answer at end of post - don't peek)

And the dishes and kitchen items that fill this old Hoosier cabinet. They are so colorful! They brighten my day just looking at them.

And did I mention I collect old salt and pepper shakers. Most of these pictured below were obtained for 25 cents to $1 for a pair. I also got the cabinet they're in at a yard sale.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg.
I'm going to have to get a bigger house if I don't stop going to yard sales.
Help me! Please.

Seriously, tho, I have slowed down a little.
I'm pickier about what I get now.
I have to be, I don't have room for anything else.

The answer to the above question: If you said it was an old floor model radio, you're right! Shelves were inserted and glass doors put on the front.
