Writer's Block!

Writer's Block!
We all get writer's block.

Sometimes - I get inspiration when I least expect it.
I will visit another blog where a comment, story, picture or sentence shouts out to me and gives me an idea.

Sometimes -  a walk outside gives me an idea.

Sometimes - I think we get writer's block because we are trying too hard.
If I just relax, an idea usually comes to me. I have to be patient.
Unfortunately, patience is not one of my virtues.

I like writing poetry. Many times pictures inspire poems.

Most of my writing block episodes don't happen when I am writing a manuscript. They happen when I am trying to come up with a new idea for a story, poem or article.

When this happens, I often search the internet for ideas, especially for articles.

You can go to Creative Writing Prompts and you will find a huge list of writing prompts to give you inspiration.

The most important thing to do when you get writer's block is to not give up. An idea will come.

Besides screaming and pulling out your hair, what do you do when you get writer's block?

  1. Hi Janet! When I get writer's block sometimes I will play music which evokes the emotion I am trying to capture. I have set aside quite a few Cd's for this purpose. I find the music will prompt memories I can build on or it will help me think of words to express a certain emotion, I may be struggling with. Have a lovely afternoon. Delisa :)

  2. Janet I'm glad Im not the only one. I'v been struggling so much lately. I do push myself sometimes and I know that's the wrong thing to do. But I've found that looking at a photo or like Delisa said, playing soft music helps. Then when I least expect it something will hit me. I write mine on paper first and it may sound crazy but What helps me is to get away from the computer and sit on the porch or somewhere quiet. Thanks for posting this.. Susie

  3. I'll get writer's block when I'm working on a manuscript and the plot needs to take a turn. A walk helps, but what seems to work the best is if I come at the scene from a completely unexpected, it-never-could-work angle, and somehow it opens up my thinking and brings a fresh idea to the page to get me going again.

  4. Janet,
Thanks for the tips how to break writer's block. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets this. These tips sound great, I'll sure try them.
When I get writer's block, I just try something different like reading a book or playing the piano.

  5. Janet-I'm like you I get inspiration from all kinds of things : ) And I find just writing something helps to get started even if I end up changing it later.

  6. What worked for me when I'd have 'idea' block was to start writing in a completely different genre, be so appalled by the lameness of what I was writing, that I was inspired to go back to the WIP!

  7. Great post, Janet. I agree...creativity and ideas have to flow spontaneously; it can't be forced.
The only way through Writer's Block is to find a way around it.
    Thanks for sharing this link.

  8. I never seem to get writers block. I think the reason is because I never try to write anything meaningful and am perfectly willing to bore the pants off anyone silly enough to read my stuff! Now you know my secret to staying poor and unappreciated as a writer!

  10. What works best for writing is walking for me, writer's block or not. Otherwise when I feel stumped it's usually a signal that I need to do more research, and so it's off to visit my old friends at the library for solace and inspiration among the stacks.
