Building a Home for our Critters

We have a few critters that live near us.

our heron

our deer, crows and wood ducks

and a squirrel

They all enjoy our little acre of land that we keep mowed and kept up. And they enjoy the creek.

We decided to go the extra mile for our wood ducks and build them a home.
We cut up a 12 foot long, 12 inches wide, rough-cut oak board
This shows the inside where we attached the wire to the front so the baby ducks can climb up it when they leave the nest

Finished house. The entry hole is 4" x 3"
Attaching it to the old pole that we concreted four feet in the ground.

Ready and waiting for next year when they take a notion to lay their eggs and start a family. We're looking forward to watching them jump from their home.

  1. The nest is a wonderful idea! We'll hope they raise a family there.

    1. We hope they will, too, Charlotte. They've already had their babies this year, so we will have to wait a while to see. But I hear that they love it when someone furnishes them with somewhere to nest.

  2. I'd like to build some bat boxes, but since I can't climb anymore, I guess I won't.

    1. I think bat boxes would be nice, too --- and owl boxes. Maybe I can talk them into making those sometime.

  4. What a neat house. Our wildlife friends are so much fun. We have a bird's nest in an outdoor light fixture that has had one family of birds hatch and fly away, and now a second family is nesting there. We also have another nest on our electric meter under the roof of the house. The little flycatcher is with her second family too. We have baby rabbits in the front yard. I love nature.

    1. Hi Beverly. I love finding nests in the strangest places. Seems you will find a robin's next just about anywhere. Sounds like you have lots of nature in your neighborhood, too.
