Weekend Happenings

I haven't accomplished much this weekend except getting sick and snuggling under this warm  WVU throw. Thank goodness for the JGH Clinic at Walmart being open on weekends. I don't think I could have waited until Monday.

I like to turn out the overhead light and turn on my motion lamp.
Do you remember these from the 1950s and 1960s.
I love them. When I was young, I remember that we had one with a lighthouse on it.
This one is of waterfalls and I was lucky enough to get it at a yard sale quite a few years ago for only $3.
They are so soothing to watch.

I finally got around to cracking a big bag of black  walnuts that had been out in the garage since December. I got a quart bag out of them and put them in the freezer. I love black walnuts, they are my favorite nuts to put in fudge, brownies, etc. Wish I had a batch of brownies with black walnuts in them right now.

And, last but not least, we discovered a bullet hole in our house! Seems it hit one of our big front porch columns and then swerved and landed in our siding near the garage door. If it had been an inch to the left, it would have  missed the column and went into our sliding glass doors of our family room. Right where I sit at my computer!

We don't know when it happened, but it had to be within the last couple of days (or nights).
It's a little scary. We could have been outside when it happened and that would have put quite a scare in me. The Sheriff's Department came out and then talked to a few neighbors from the direction of the bullet. They seem to think it might have came from people shooting at coyotes on the ridge.

We were very lucky that the bad weather missed us on Friday. We got a bad storm that only lasted fifteen or twenty minutes.

What's been happening in your neighborhood.

  1. LOVE black walnuts too Janet. We have a bunch but haven't cracked them yet. R will do it, I just need to remind him. We both like them in cookies, banana bread etc.
They keep well in the freezer. My mom used to give me a bag full from her freezer. The best way to get them!
Sorry to hear about the gun shot and happy that it did no damage.
We hear people shooting around us too. We're in a rural area.
    You take care.
    Talk soon. B

  2. I remember cracking out walnuts as a kid, and the brownies and cakes that Mom made with them. Glad the bullet didn't get you! Something to thank the Lord for, Im guess.

  3. Wow Janet! I'm glad the bullet hit where it did and didn't go into your house! That is so scary.

I didn't know there were clinics at WalMart. Hope you are feeling better.

We weren't affected by the storms either. Just some lightening and thunder. The rain and wind was heavier a few days before than it was Friday night. Saturday morning we did notice that the water did get up but we didn't know it. It got really high down the road.

  4. Thanks all, I'm sure glad we weren't out there when the bullet came through, too. Angela- as for the clinic at WalMart. It hasn't been there very long, they put it up front where there used to be a little arcade area for the kids. It is real nice, the people are super and very nice and thorough and the best part is they are open until 8pm during the week and until 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

  8. I have a little jar of black walnut kernels in the freezer; they were picked out by my Mama, and she's been gone for almost 25 years. I know they would be rancid, but I just can't throw them out, knowing how much work those dear hands did picking them out.

  10. Hi Janet! My family loved unusual lamps when I was a kid too. We had one similar to yours only it was a mountain waterfall with very vivid green trees and blue water. We also had a rain lamp, which was my favorite. Then my brother bought a fiber optic lamp that changed all different colors. Yours is beautiful. I sure am sorry that you guys found that bullet, it must have been very scary. I'm glad you had the police come out and take a look at it. We had some really bad weather here this weekend and Saturday they put out a tornado warning. Our niece who lives in a trailer nearby came over as fast as she could. The wind was just howling, but eventually it passed over with no damage other than a few downed tree limbs. I hope you have a restful and lovely evening tonight! Delisa :)

  12. Ah, country living. We found a bullet hole last month in my husband's tool trailer that sits at the top of the farm drive. Had to remind the neighbor that our 4 kids are always wandering the property and he assured us he only shoots deer at night. Hah! But he came over and patched the hole. Oh well.

  13. I just found your blog! Don't know why it took so long. I envy you your black walnuts; they're my favorite but none grow around here.

Off to read some more! :)

  15. I hope you are feeling better now!
I can only imagine how the thought of that bullet scared you. A year or so ago someone was shooting our direction and we WERE outside. Yeah, that scared me!
